#150: Exploring What’s New in Prometheus 2.0

On this latest episode of InApps Technology Analysts podcast, we sat down with Robust Perception Founder Brian Brazil and Frederic Branczyk, engineer at CoreOS to get the latest insights around the recent Prometheus 2.0 release. With new developments in storage and the inclusion of a new time series database (TSDB), Prometheus 2.0, managed by the Cloud Native Computing Foundation, brings new features such as instantaneous backup to users.
“What really helps is we now fully control the storage,” Brazil said. “Before, we were depending on LevelDB for some of our things […] Whereas now, because we fully control the code we can say ‘OK, stop writing for a bit and dump out a snapshot of the current state. Having to control the code ourselves is what really helped, and fully knowing the semantics of how it works in order to produce the correct backup.”
As its use cases continue to evolve, Prometheus remains simple to use, Branczyk went on to explain, which is one of its many draws for use in production environments. “One of the reasons people love Prometheus is for its simplicity. It’s a single static building binary, you just drop it on a server, you run it, and it’s working. So that’s something users really appreciate.”
