No longer considered an ephemeral concept as it originally was, data management has become a huge issue and challenge, especially for managing stateless data in Kubernetes environments.

The state of data management was the subject of discussion in this edition of InApps Technology Makers podcast, hosted by Alex Williams, founder and publisher of InApps Technology. The guests were Michael Cade, senior global technologist, Veeam Software and Nigel Poulton, owner of nigelpoulton.com, which offers Kubernetes and Docker training and other services. Both Cade and Poulton were also involved in the organization of Cloud Native Data Management Day, a co-event held in conjunction with the KubeCon+CloudNativeCon EU last month.

Why Cloud Native Data Management Day Is About Stateful Data

Among other things, the co-located event revealed how cloud native data management as a concept is coming to a close as practical practices and solutions emerge. “Cloud Native Management Day is a reflection of where the technology is at, at the moment — we’re at a point where we can do more than just talk about stuff. We can actually put the rubber to the road sometimes with this data management in the context of containers and Kubernetes,” said Poulton. “But also, there’s a massive demand for it, because I think uses are getting beyond like — sounds really cheesy, right? — but you know, that low-hanging fruit that’s like stateless applications that anybody can do. We’re still sort of progressing beyond that and we’re wanting to put more serious applications onto containers and manage them with Kubernetes.”

While data management with containers on Kubernetes is “new to just about everybody, what I think is really interesting is that a lot of the companies are coming to the party now in the data-management space,” said Poulton.
